FAQ About Tools, the Lathe & Finishes
I'm always being asked my opinion on different tools and lathes. The trouble is there are an astounding number of makes of tools and lathes available and I've only tried a small number of them so my knowledge is somewhat limited. Also I tend to think if you really want to achieve something you can do it with any tools or equipment but I do realise that perhaps the same result could be achieved slightly easier or quicker with better tools and equipment.
However based on my experiences with the tools and equipment I have tried I have answered some of the most frequently asked questions below as well as the common question of 'which finish do you use?'
What lathe do you prefer to work on?
At the moment I have two lathes. The one I've had the longest is an Omega Stubby S750, which I have done all my work on including the tiny turned items inside my ornamental eggs.
Which are good makes of chisel but not too expensive?
I think if you are new to turning then it is better to buy a reasonably priced set of chisels and see if you want to continue with it before investing heavily.
